Franz Nicolay is a musician and writer living in New York’s Hudson Valley. In addition to records under his own name (“a natural-born star”—Pitchfork), he has been a member of cabaret-punk orchestra The World/Inferno Friendship Society, “world’s best bar band” the Hold Steady, Balkan-jazz quartet Guignol, co-founded the composer-performer collective Anti-Social Music, was a touring member of agit-punks Against Me!; and recorded or performed with dozens of other acts. He was once named #1 of “Punk’s 10 Best Accordion Players.” His new record New River is out now on Don Giovanni Records,

“Sad, wild folksongs...[an] unconventional multitalent.” —Rolling Stone

“Punk-tinged raconteur…with disarmingly honest lyrics and a sense of musical adventurousness.” —The New Yorker

MARIA SONEVYTSKY was a member of the “twisted Andrews Sisters novelty group" The Debutante Hour and the new music mavericks of Anti-Social Music; has sung Ukrainian village songs with Zozulka, and produced an album called The Chornobyl Songs Project on Smithsonian Folkways with Ensemble Hilka. She is the author of the award-winning Wild Music: Song and Sovereignty in Ukraine and the upcoming 33 1/3 book Vopli Vidopliassova’s Tantsi.
